In April 2017, with the support of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the GIYC established the Rome Statement on the Contribution of Indigenous Youth Towards a World Without Hunger. This Statement makes several recommendations; two are currently progressing towards their implementation: the creation of an internship program, and establishment of a Consultative Indigenous Youth Forum (Youth Forum).

The GIYC is working to establish a Global Indigenous Youth Consultative Forum to Eliminate Hunger within the FAO (Youth Forum) to guarantee the role of indigenous youth in the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 2. The FAO and the GIYC have initiated a negotiation process on the concept, structure and method of work of the Youth Forum. The GIYC has conducted regional consultations to establish regional positions towards the Youth Forum in the FAO.

The Youth Forum within FAO will take place every two years, commencing in 2019. It will bring together indigenous youth from the seven socio-cultural regions and will have an advisory committee composed of indigenous elders from the seven geo-cultural regions.
